orange you glad…

Until recently, orange and I haven’t gotten along very well. I’m fairly sure this antagonistic relationship began my sophomore year of college during sorority rush. For the uninitiated, let me briefly explain….

A key component to recruiting new “sisters” into the house involved a series of themed parties, each of which kicked off with a fully-costumed song-and-dance routine. Meanwhile, potential pledges waited in a nervous huddle on the sidewalk until the act was over and they were invited in for the meet-and-greet.

Under normal circumstances, this process was deemed unpleasant for the rushees, as they were being judged over and over for about a week. Sophomore year, however, I would have happily traded places with them so I wouldn’t have to wear a bright-orange dress, all the while skipping, hopping, and singing the song, “Getting to Know You.” If memory serves, several cardboard sun placards were involved in the performance.

Three problems here: We looked like a gigantic dancing daffodil. Very few of us (myself included) could sing that song on pitch. And even fewer of us (myself included) were flattered by fluorescent orange. It’s a wonder we managed to get a pledge class together.  

 But that was years and years ago and I’m slowly coming around. Here’s why….
