last resort

I’ve always wanted to go to St. Barth’s, the exquisite island in the French West Indies, where celebrities frolic in the sun while wearing things like Tory Burch tunics and Chanel bikinis. I almost got there on my honeymoon, until our travel agent informed me (I was, at the time, a shamefully fearful flier) about “the little transportation issue.” Seems the airport there involves a rather startling and rapid descent over an extremely steep hilltop…whereby the pilot quickly hits the brakes on the short runway to avoid skidding straight into those Tory-Burch-clad vacationers. And that is because the beach lies directly at the foot of the runway.

And so it came as no surprise to me that The History Channel’s recent show, Most Extreme Airports, ranked St. Barth’s as having the third-most-dangerous airport in the world; which, rather prophetically, is named Gustof III. I kid you not.

First, you navigate the road and the hill...

...and then hit the landing strip (not the beach, which has a sign that advises sunbathers to avoid lying directly at the end of the runway).

But I am REALLY thrilled to share with you that you can now have a little bit of St. Barth’s without the harrowing flight or the price tag: Calypso St. Barth, a brand known for its upscale resort wear (think $850 for a beach dress), is introducing an affordable, limited-edition collection for www.target.com on May 1st. Seriously, folks, I’ve been waiting for this launch for months and am chomping at the bit to get my hands on the fab new tunics and tanks and tops and totes (and lots, lots more), all priced at under $60.

Fan-print dress; $39.99

Embroidered ruffle-dress; $39.99

Girls' shift dress; $16.99

Paisley-print tunic; $14.99

Scarf tote; $24.99

Beauty bags; $12.99 - $16.99

Silver pouf (also in gold); $59.99

You might be happy to hear that I’ve long since conquered my fear of flying, and would happily swoop into St. Barth’s for a beach vacation in bargain clothes. Anybody been there? I want to hear your landing stories….
